This is the name given to this wood because of the Ambrosia Beetle. The beetle will bore into the soft maple board and lay its larvae. It also brings in a fungus that gives the larvae something to eat when it hatches. That is the reason for the unique markings on these boards. Some boards may only have a few markings while others will have considerably more.
