A rough board that looks oversized and imperfect can become the best part of a finished piece. The key is knowing what you are seeing before it goes across a jointer or planer. When learning how to buy rough hardwood, focus less on the board’s current appearance and more on its usable yield, moisture level, grain, and suitability for the job at hand.

Rough hardwood is sold before it has been surfaced smooth and brought to a final thickness. That gives you more control over the finished material, often at a better value than pre-surfaced stock. It also means you need to buy with a plan. A beautiful 4/4 board may not finish at the thickness you expected if it has cup, twist, checking, or heavy saw marks.

Start With the Finished Part, Not the Lumber Rack

Before selecting a species or calculating board footage, write down the finished dimensions of each part. Cabinet door frames, table aprons, flooring, face frames, drawer boxes, and wide tabletop panels all require different thicknesses, widths, and grain patterns. Your lumber should give you enough material to machine each part cleanly while preserving the look you want.

For example, a rough 4/4 board is commonly about 1 inch thick before surfacing. After jointing and planing, it may finish near 3/4 inch, but that is not guaranteed. If the board is bowed or cupped, more material must come off to make it flat. If your project requires a true 3/4-inch finished part, 4/4 stock is usually appropriate. If you need a finished 1-inch part, start with 5/4 or thicker material rather than hoping an especially clean 4/4 board will work.

Allow extra length for trimming end checks, snipe, and square cuts. For most furniture parts, adding several inches beyond the finished length is sensible. On wide panels, allow extra width as well. You may need to remove a damaged edge, straighten a rip cut, or match grain across adjacent boards.

Understand rough thicknesses

Hardwood thickness is commonly described in quarters of an inch. The number refers to the rough thickness before milling, not the final thickness. Common examples include 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 8/4.

A 4/4 board is roughly 1 inch rough, 5/4 is roughly 1 1/4 inches rough, 6/4 is roughly 1 1/2 inches rough, and 8/4 is roughly 2 inches rough. Exact thickness can vary, especially with mill-run material. Ask the supplier what the stock actually measures and what finished thickness is realistic after surfacing.

Choose Species for Performance and Appearance

Species selection is not only a color decision. Density, hardness, movement, grain, workability, and natural durability all affect how a board performs in the shop and in service.

Black Walnut is a favorite for furniture, cabinets, and statement tabletops because of its rich brown color and generally cooperative machining. Cherry offers warm color that deepens over time and works well for refined furniture and interior millwork. Hard Maple is tough, light-colored, and well suited to durable work surfaces, cabinetry, and contemporary furniture. Soft Maple is easier to machine and can be a practical choice where the look of maple matters more than maximum hardness.

White Oak has strong moisture resistance and pronounced grain, making it a solid choice for furniture, flooring, and projects where durability matters. Red Oak is widely used and readily recognizable for its open grain. Ash provides strength and a bold grain pattern, while Eastern Red Cedar brings aromatic character and natural insect resistance to closets, chests, and decorative work.

Specialty species deserve their own consideration. Tiger Maple can turn a simple piece into a focal point, but its figure needs careful board selection and milling. Sapele offers attractive ribbon grain in quartersawn boards. Bolivian Rosewood is dense, dramatic, and better reserved for applications where its color and character justify the added cost and machining effort.

If you are staining, ask how the species takes color. If you are building a tabletop, compare boards side by side in the intended grain direction. Wood moves seasonally, so grain orientation and construction details matter just as much as species.

Inspect Each Board for Yield

Buying rough lumber is hands-on. Do not judge a board from one end or from a stack. Pull it out, view it along its length, and inspect both faces and edges in good light. The question is not whether a board has defects. Nearly every board does. The question is whether those characteristics fall outside the parts you need.

Look for four forms of warp: bow along the face, crook along the edge, cup across the width, and twist from corner to corner. Mild warp can be milled out if the board is thick enough and you have extra width or length. Severe twist can consume a surprising amount of material. A wide, thin board with significant cup may be better used for narrow parts than for a wide panel.

Check both ends for splits and end checks. These are common and often harmless if you have trimming allowance. Pay attention to knots, bark pockets, pinholes, mineral streaks, and cracks. Some are defects for painted cabinetry but desirable features in rustic furniture or live-edge work. Decide whether they fit the project before you buy, not after the board is cut.

Grain direction deserves close attention. Straight-grained boards are usually easier to plane and more predictable for long rails, legs, and trim. Rift- and quartersawn material can offer excellent stability and a distinct visual effect, particularly in oak, sycamore, and sapele. Flat-sawn boards often yield wider faces and lively cathedral grain, which can be ideal for panels but may show more seasonal width movement.

Buy for the cut list, not average board footage

Hardwood is commonly priced by the board foot. One board foot equals 144 cubic inches, calculated as thickness in inches times width in inches times length in feet, divided by 12. That calculation tells you how much lumber you are purchasing, but it does not tell you how much of it becomes usable parts.

A project may need 40 board feet on paper, yet require 50 or 60 board feet after waste, grain matching, defects, and milling allowance. The right overage depends on the project. Straightforward face frames can use shorter, narrower stock efficiently. A dining table with matched color and continuous-looking grain requires more selection and more waste.

For furniture and cabinetry, many experienced buyers plan for at least 20 percent extra material. Increase that allowance for highly figured boards, wide panels, long clear parts, or projects where color matching is critical. It is usually wiser to buy an extra matching board while the material is available than to search later for a close substitute.

Ask About Moisture Content and Drying

A board can look straight at the mill and still move after it reaches your shop if it has not been dried properly or acclimated to its final environment. Kiln drying is not simply a box to check. A controlled drying process helps reduce moisture while limiting stress, checking, and instability.

For interior furniture, cabinetry, and millwork, lumber should generally be appropriate for the moisture conditions where the finished piece will live. The exact target depends on regional climate and the building’s indoor conditions. Ask the supplier how the lumber was dried, whether moisture content is checked, and how the wood has been stored.

After purchase, stack lumber flat with stickers between layers so air can circulate. Let it acclimate in your shop before final milling, especially if it has traveled through a major temperature or humidity change. For demanding work, rough-mill oversized parts first, allow them to rest, then make final passes before joinery and glue-up.

Work With a Supplier Who Knows the Material

The best lumber purchase is a conversation, not a blind order. Bring your cut list, finished thicknesses, quantity estimate, and photos or sketches if the project has a specific visual goal. Tell the supplier whether you need long clear boards, wide material, rift grain, matched color, figured faces, or stock suitable for outdoor use.
