A beautiful board can still be the wrong board for the job. A clear, wide piece of walnut may be worth every dollar for a single-slab tabletop, while a cabinetmaker building painted drawer boxes may get better value from shorter stock with sound character. This hardwood grading guide explains what lumber grades actually measure so you can buy for usable yield, appearance, and budget instead of relying on a label alone.
Hardwood grades are most useful when you understand one central idea: they describe the percentage of clear, usable wood that can be cut from a board. They do not guarantee that every board is long, wide, perfectly colored, defect-free from end to end, or ready to finish without any waste.
For most domestic hardwoods, formal grades follow standards established by the National Hardwood Lumber Association. Inspectors evaluate the board’s face and determine how much of it can be recovered in clear cuttings after defects such as knots, splits, bark pockets, rot, wane, stain, or holes are removed.
That makes grade a yield system. A higher grade generally gives a furniture builder more clear material per board foot and less time working around defects. It does not automatically mean the lumber has more attractive grain. In fact, some of the most visually interesting boards, including figured maple, knotty cherry, quartersawn sycamore, and live-edge material, may not fit neatly into a high clear-grade category.
Grade also does not replace a close look at moisture content, straightness, surfacing, thickness, or color. A properly kiln-dried board that is flat and stable can be a better purchase than a higher-grade board that has been stored poorly or has significant warp.
FAS stands for Firsts and Seconds, the top standard grade for much of the hardwood industry. FAS lumber must yield at least 83 1/3% clear-face cuttings. It is commonly selected for fine furniture, architectural millwork, premium cabinetry, wide panels, and projects where long, clear sections matter.
FAS boards have minimum size requirements, so they tend to be longer and wider than lower-grade lumber. That can reduce glue-ups and make grain matching easier. The trade-off is price. If your cut list calls for many small parts, paying for long, wide, clear boards can create more expensive offcuts than necessary.
F1F means FAS One Face. One face meets the higher FAS standard, while the reverse face meets a lower requirement. It is often an excellent fit when only one face will be visible, such as a tabletop underside, a cabinet component, or a panel that will be veneered or painted on one side.
Select lumber also provides at least 83 1/3% clear yield on its better face, but its reverse face can meet No. 1 Common requirements. It generally comes in somewhat smaller minimum board sizes than FAS.
For many furniture and cabinet projects, Select is a practical middle ground. The show face can give you clean, attractive material, while the reverse side may contain a knot, color change, or other feature you can place on a hidden surface. When the project has a clear front and a concealed back, Select can stretch a material budget without sacrificing the finished appearance.
No. 1 Common, often called cabinet grade, must yield at least 66 2/3% clear wood. The boards may contain more knots, mineral streaks, checks, color variation, and shorter clear sections than FAS or Select, but that does not make them poor lumber.
This grade is frequently a smart choice for cabinet parts, face frames, rails and stiles, drawer components, smaller furniture pieces, flooring, and any project broken into shorter lengths. A skilled woodworker can often recover a surprising amount of excellent material by laying out parts before making the first cut.
The key is matching the board to the cut list. If you need eight-foot clear rails, No. 1 Common may create too much waste. If you need twenty 18-inch cabinet parts, it can be exactly the right purchase.
No. 2A Common offers at least 50% clear yield. It can be a value-driven option for short components, rustic work, painted projects, utility pieces, and situations where visual variation is welcome. Expect to spend more time cutting around defects and sorting boards.
Character, rustic, cabin, wormy, knotty, and similar labels are different. These are often supplier or product descriptions rather than one universal formal grade. They may include sound knots, mineral, worm holes, dramatic color variation, cracks, or other features intentionally preserved for their appearance.
Character stock can be the perfect choice for a farmhouse table, a feature wall, or a statement bar top. It is less predictable for clean-lined furniture where every face must be uniform. Ask whether knots and checks are sound, whether voids need epoxy, and how much extra material you should buy to allow for your preferred look.
Before comparing prices by the board foot, decide what the finished piece demands. A dining tabletop needs enough clear, stable material to create visually compatible boards across a broad surface. A set of painted built-ins may prioritize straight stock, workable widths, and stable moisture over clear grain. Flooring requires consistent machining and a sensible balance of hardness, movement, and character.
Species changes the equation too. Black walnut naturally varies in color and can include sapwood that some builders feature and others cut away. White oak may include medullary rays that become a design highlight when quartersawn. Hard maple can be clean and pale but may contain mineral streaks. Cherry darkens with age and may show gum pockets or color shifts that are normal to the species.
For specialty woods, formal NHLA-style grades may not tell the whole story. Exotic lumber, figured boards, thick slabs, live-edge pieces, and highly figured tiger maple are often sold primarily on appearance, dimensions, dryness, and figure. In these cases, selecting individual boards is far more meaningful than asking for a grade alone.
A grade stamp provides useful starting information, but your eyes and a little planning should make the final decision. Bring your cut list and think in terms of usable parts, not just total footage.
Look down the length of each board for bow, crook, cup, and twist. Check both ends for splits, end checks, and signs that the board was cut or dried under stress. Some defects can be trimmed away easily, while a twisted board can consume a great deal of thickness during milling.
Then assess the faces. Identify knots, sapwood, pinholes, mineral, cracks, and color variation. None is automatically unacceptable. The right question is whether it falls where you need a clear cutting or whether it adds character you want to showcase.
Pay attention to grain orientation as well. Flat-sawn boards often show broad cathedral patterns and can move more across their width. Rift-sawn and quartersawn material typically offers straighter grain, improved dimensional consistency, and distinct visual effects depending on the species. For doors, wide panels, and table parts, mixing orientations without a plan can make grain and seasonal movement harder to manage.
A common mistake is treating FAS as the best choice for every build. It is the best choice when its clear yield and larger board sizes reduce labor or help achieve a clean visual result. But it can be unnecessary for smaller parts, concealed components, or projects designed around natural variation.
A smarter approach is to divide your cut list into visible long parts, visible short parts, and hidden parts. Use higher-grade or hand-selected boards for the first group. Use Select or No. 1 Common for shorter visible components when the grain works. Save sound character stock for concealed pieces or projects where its natural marks belong in the design.
This mixed strategy often delivers a better project at a fairer cost. It also gives you more control over appearance than buying an entire order based on a single grade label.
Even premium FAS lumber needs proper drying and storage. Hardwood should be kiln-dried to a moisture content appropriate for its intended environment, then allowed to acclimate before final milling. In heated and air-conditioned interiors, wood that is too wet can shrink, cup, open joints, or distort after installation.
Buying from a supplier that controls cutting and kiln drying gives you a clearer picture of how the lumber was handled. Ask how the wood was dried, whether it has been stored in a covered environment, and whether it is surfaced or rough. Rough lumber gives you flexibility to mill final dimensions, but you need to account for enough thickness to flatten and plane it.
